“The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1v5
“The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1 v 5
Recently, I’ve been reminded of the powerful meaning behind this verse of Scripture. For me, I think one of the key things to note about this verse is that it says “The light shines in the darkness.” This verse does not tell us that we will avoid the dark or that we will never have to go through these dark times, but instead it reminds us of a triumphant light which prevails over all darkness. Some of the times that I feel attacked in darkness include feelings of confusion, uncertainty and doubt – all feelings which are particularly prevalent in this post-graduation stage of life. Everyone faces dark times – it’s inevitable – but John 16 v 33 says
“In this world you will have trouble! But take heart. I have overcome the world.”
Faith speaks differently of darkness, faith believes and trusts that even when we walk through this darkness, we can look to Jesus and know that no darkness has overcome this light. Faith searches for the light that shines through, the light which prevails over all darkness. Sometimes it is in these dark times that we can see best where the glimmer of light shines through. Over 2000 years ago God sent his Son into the world to bring light; and darkness was defeated once and for all when Jesus Christ died on the cross for each one of us. The resurrection of Jesus brings light to the darkest moments of our life. We do not need to fear the darkness because Jesus won the battle between light and dark.
Ultimately, the light always wins. Jesus always wins. If you are a Christian you walk with the light of the world in your heart, so know that no matter what darkness comes your way, you are triumphant. When you feel darkness creep in, lean into God and his promises for you. He’s the light of the whole universe but He also wants to be the light of your life.
And when we know and love Him in our hearts, we are to shine as lights in the darkness so that people can see Christ in us - the ultimate source of light (Matthew 5 v 14-16).
